The Brilliant

A Yacht in troubled waters…

In February 2014, we received a satellite phone call from a sailing yacht off the east coast of Florida where Pete Peterson and his wife Stephanie were experiencing engine problems. Pete explained his problems with the yacht (The Brilliant) to our senior engineer, Mick. During their conversation, Mick advised Pete how to manipulate the fuel pump so as to reach port. Within 48 hours the pump was dismantled in our workshop and repairs were underway.

Whilst working in Crete in 2001, Pete and Stephanie found The Brilliant (a 1989 Moody 425 sailing yacht with a Thornycroft T-98 engine) in Marmaris, Turkey. They moved aboard in 2002 when Pete retired from the US Navy. Their epic 14-year sailing adventure began here. After their Mediterranean voyages they completed a breathtaking transatlantic crossing from Spain to the Caribbean.  After this, and their further travels around the Caribbean Islands to the US east coast, it is understandable that The Brilliant needed some work. Or as Pete and Stephanie put it, when asked why they were in Vero Beach longer than anticipated, ‘Well, our fuel pump has decided it wanted a UK health spa holiday at Sheaf Diesel Services. For the good of all of us… we sent her.’

Emergency Diesel Pump Repair

Under the circumstances, we treated the situation as an emergency and the pump had arrived back on US soil within 72 hours of us receiving it. We feel privileged to have been part of The Brilliant’s remarkable story and help the Peterson’s continue their retirement dream.
